This differs from most sublingual CBD tincture droppers, capsules, and other CBD products readily on the market that recommend consuming a larger dose, one or two times a day.

As an example, the FDA approved Epidiolex CBD Oil, which is the first FDA approved cannabis derived drug. Epidiolex was found to help children with the cruelest epilepsy syndromes which tend to not respond to antiseizure medications, including Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Epidiolex, which is a prescription CBD oil, is prescribed with being taken in specific doses anywhere from 2-4 times a day, depending on the condition being treated.

However, those who support the concept of microdosing (including us at Simply Add™) ask:

What if this was consumed in ways that would provide the body a more natural, consistent supply of CBD, other cannabinoids, and terpenes?

Microdosing CBD is debated as being an ideal method of consuming CBD, depending upon what it is being used for and how much CBD needs to be consumed.

The argument that supports CBD microdosing as a better way to consume CBD oil has some strong argumentative points as to why we believe at Simply Add™ that CBD can be highly beneficial for many people, either as a sole way of consuming CBD or in addition to taking larger doses at certain times of the day.

So let’s dive into microdosing CBD a bit and how it can be used to enhance the overall benefits from CBD itself.

There are currently no controlled scientific studies on microdosing CBD completed. This does not mean that microdosing isn’t a valid approach to consuming CBD oil.

So, we decided to do some digging and found a list of completed scientific studies on microdosing. Some were on microdosing pharmaceutical drugs and some even on psychedelics. [ps2id id=’microdosingCBDoverview’ target=”/]

If we apply the knowledge from these studies onto CBD oil, microdosing could be the best way to consume CBD oil.

Let’s dive in to see how we can apply the knowledge from these studies to CBD oil.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Overview of Microdosing CBD Oil” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580251968377{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]The most popular ways to consume CBD include:

  1. Dropping CBD oil right into the mouth (sublingually)
  2. Making CBD oil drink recipes to drink CBD
  3. Baking CBD edibles to ingest CBD
  4. Crafting CBD skincare cosmetics to apply topically
  5. Smoking high CBD hemp flowers
  6. Vaping CBD concentrates

All of these ways can be used to microdose CBD oil.

Caution on Vaping CBD Oils: We at Simply Add™ are against CBD oil vaping. There have been too many recent vaping illness reports occurring across the US. With the numerous other ways to consume CBD oil, there is no need to risk it with vaping CBD concentrates.

Microdosing is the theory that the body would better absorb and get more of the benefits of a substance if taken in smaller doses on a more regular basis, compared to larger doses with less frequency.

There has been little research on microdosing CBD, which is why we have turned to studying the other National Institute of Health’s studies involving microdosing of other substances. To date, there have been over 400 microdosing studies published by the NIH – from lung cancer diagnostic microdosing different drugs, to the potential challenges and benefits of microdosing psychedelics.

Applying the knowledge from those studies to CBD oil, in theory, microdosing CBD oil allows the body to have a more consistent supply of CBD compared to potentially having a “feast or famine” supply or “peak and valley” benefits from consuming CBD oil in larger doses once or twice a day. This is due to the the way the human body digests and the skin absorbs CBD. We’ll explain both of these in detail in the next two sections of this article.[ps2id id=’digestingCBD’ target=”/]

So, let’s dive into how microdosing CBD oil can work to help regulate the body and benefit people in the numerous ways being stated by everyone in our society by reviewing some of the actual findings of studies published on the NIH.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How CBD Oil Microdosing Works in the Digestive System” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_custom_heading text=”CBD Edibles Microdose Ingestion” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1580244444542{padding-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580252213828{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]CBD, like many other cannabinoids, is fat soluble. When you ingest CBD or apply it topically to your skin, the molecules absorb into the fat cells of your body.

In fact, studies have found that there are several cannabinoids already present within the body, specifically in the “endocannabinoid system”.

According to a NIH PubMed publication, there is evidence that suggests our digestive systems contain high levels of endocannabinoids and enzymes involved in the synthesis and metabolism of endocannabinoids. It is in our digestive system that several endocannabinoids and enzymes to process these already exist. These help synthesis and metabolize them, passing them from our digestive system and eventually interacting with different receptors in our brain.

The receptors are specifically the G-protein coupled receptor family, including the cannabinoid receptors 1 (CB1R) and cannabinoid receptors 2 (CB2R). According to this previously mentioned NIH PubMed publication, the CB1R is the prominent subtype in the central nervous system (CNS).

This CB1R has become the focus of many recent and current studies as it may be a potential therapeutic avenue in several pathological conditions, which include neuropsychological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. These cannabinoids and receptors may also “modulate signal transduction pathways” and have impact on parallel sites within the brain’s neurological system.

The cannabinoids we may supplement our diet with are like sending in reinforcements to the existing endocannabinoids that already reside within our bodies. Each different cannabinoid we supplement our bodies with is a different compound structure, resulting in different effects on the receptors. For example, THC having psychoactive effects and CBD not having these effects.

Making cannabinoid edibles to microdose through eating, such as CBD edibles, is a great way to microdose as the digestion process is long. After consuming a cannabinoid edible, the initial onset of the cannabinoids are delayed from 30 minutes to 2 hours, although it can take up to 6 hours. After the initial onset, the effects can last 8-20 hours. This means by eating a cannabinoid edible, your body will be slowly processing the cannabinoids through your digestive system a little at a time, or microdosing, for 8-20 hours.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”CBD Drink Microdose Ingestion” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1576441080518{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]If you plan on making cannabinoid drinks, such as CBD drinks, the cannabinoids will travel through the same digestive path as eating a cannabinoid edible. If consumed on an empty stomach, the effects of the cannabinoids will have a rapid initial onset that will begin in as little as 5 minutes. When consuming your CBD drink, or any other cannabinoid drink, during or after a meal, it can take 45 minutes to 2 hours for the stomach to digest the food and the water (or any other drink with cannabinoids) to be fully absorbed into the bloodstream.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Benefits of Microdosing CBD with Edibles” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1576441159951{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]When microdosing any cannabinoid like CBD, you can be more precise with your intake. If you learn how to make CBD gummies or any of our other cannabinoid edibles recipes, you will know how to make sure each of your edibles has as close to even amount of CBD in it as possible. You get even more precise when making a CBD drink recipe, as you can make one drink at a time putting in the exact amount of water soluble CBD oil dose you want to consume into the drink.

Along with being more precise, you may feel the effects a bit more than if you were to microdose your cannabinoids through skincare products. This is because your digestive system is directly connected to your CB1R & CB2R receptors and those enzymes help to feed those receptors with the cannabinoids. You will physically or mentally feel the onset of the cannabinoids when orally consuming cannabinoids in drinks or edibles.

However, there are some downsides to consuming cannabinoids like CBD edibles and drinks compared to using a CBD skincare product.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Negatives of Microdosing CBD with Edibles” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580251101514{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]The major downside to consuming cannabinoids through edibles and drinks is the bioavailability of the cannabinoids when they are being processed through your digestive system.

As the cannabinoids are digested, there is some loss of the cannabinoids that occurs due to the acids in your stomach. The acids in your stomach burn off the cannabinoids and turn these cannabinoids into waste before they are able to reach your blood stream. Some may additionally be processed out again when going through your liver.

This is why we designed Simply Add CBD Baking Oil with MCT as the carrier oil. We infused MCT oil as the carrier oil to help prevent stomach acids from destroying a large amount of cannabinoids while they process through your stomach and your liver. You also get the added benefits of the healthy fats in the MCT oil.

The other downside is specifically to cannabinoid drinks when consumed on an empty stomach. According to a 2012 study of 36 participants completed by the European Journal of Applied Physiology, a drink consumed on an empty stomach will pass through the stomach directly into the large intestine, entering into the bloodstream within five minutes of that first sip.

Using a CBD infused drink as an example, if you were to consume a CBD drink on an empty stomach, your body will rapidly process this liquid into your blood stream within minutes. You could process the entire drink through your body in less than an hour. This means you will get your dose of CBD processed through and into your blood stream all within that same timeframe. This is, of course, not microdosing.[ps2id id=’cbdskincare’ target=”/]

If you plan on making cannabinoid drinks, like one of our CBD recipes, and you do not want to have a rapid peak and come down of the effects, you must know how to microdose with CBD drinks. We’ll explain how to do this later in this article.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How CBD Oil Microdosing Works with Skincare Topicals” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_custom_heading text=”CBD Skincare Microdose CBD Oil Cosmetics” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1580244506689{padding-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1576469993514{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]Our skin is the largest organ of our entire body. Since the discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body, there has been several studies performed to begin understanding how the ECS functions with our largest organ, skin.

A recent article published on the NIH titled The Endocannabinoid System of the Skin in Health and Disease compiled sound evidence conducted by various studies concluded that the ECS is connected directly to the function of our skin.

One of the studies quoted in the NIH article was a study by Karsak et al., which that the levels of endocannabinoids in the skin of mice increased when exposed to dermatitis. This suggested the ECS may exert a protective role in allergic inflammation of the skin.

Why are mice studied? Answer: Mice actually have an endocannabinoid system containing CB1 and CB2 receptors very similar to humans!

Another study that focused on Cannabinoid Mechanisms of Pain Suppression suggests that the ECS has a particularly crucial role in both central and peripheral processing, and in the control of skin-derived sensories, including pain and itch.

These studies, as well as many others recently published, are paving the way for a booming market for CBD skincare oil and other topical cannabinoid skincare products as a natural way to assist with many conditions.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Benefits of Microdosing CBD Topically” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1576470086487{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]A publication titled Cannabinoid Delivery Systems for Pain and Inflammation Treatment found that applying cannabinoids topically to the skin “avoids the first-pass metabolism effect that is associated with the oral route and improves drug bioavailability.” This is a two part benefit to microdosing CBD topically with skincare cosmetics.

First, the body will not lose some of the cannabinoids as we previously discussed would naturally occur in the digestion process as soon as the cannabinoids hit the acids in your stomach. Since the cannabinoids would be absorbed through your skin and never pass through your stomach, you theoretically would have to use less cannabinoids to get the same job done.

Second, applying cannabinoids topically improves bioavailability. This means that more of the cannabinoids would actually become available to your body since they are able to move easier into your bloodstream when compared to consuming cannabinoids orally.

They went on to say that topical use and absorbing cannabinoids through the skin “allows a steady infusion of a drug to be delivered over a prolonged period of time, while also minimizing the adverse effects of higher drug peak concentrations, which can improve patient adherence.”

In short, applying cannabinoid products such as CBD lotion or CBD lip balm is a form of microdosing because your skin will naturally absorb the cannabinoids into your bloodstream over a longer period of time.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Negatives of Microdosing CBD Topically” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580251133475{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]Although applying CBD or other cannabinoids topically has its benefits to allowing more cannabinoids to be absorbed by the body into the bloodstream at a steady, slow pace, there are some downsides to topical microdosing.

First off, absorption is a slow process, taking 1-2 hours to begin absorbing the cannabinoids into your blood stream. The process your body goes through to absorb the cannabinoids is also erratic and variable based on your skin type.

Second, there are limited, slower on-setting psychoactive effects compared to what may occur if consumed orally. Even a good, legal CBD oil that is <0.3% THC will have slight feelings and effects throughout the body when taken orally. The same oil used topically will probably not have this same, whole-body effect. It will be more focused effects and feelings on the area where the CBD oil was applied. [ps2id id=’cbdedibles’ target=”/]

This may lead some people to not believe cannabinoid skincare products actually work, or at least for them. For this reason, we typically do not recommend applying cannabinoids topically as the only route to supplementing with cannabinoids due to it’s almost complete opposite disadvantages when compared right up against oral consumption.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How to Make Edibles to Microdose CBD” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_custom_heading text=”Calculating CBD Oil Edible Dosage” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1580244585872{padding-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580245085331{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]One of the hardest items to figure out is CBD oil dosages when consuming CBD edibles.

First, everyone has different body chemistry, weight, medical needs, etc., that all weigh into figuring out the correct CBD dosage. In considering all of these variables coupled with the limited research conducted on microdosing with CBD edibles, or really any other cannabinoid edible, it is unrealistic to figure out the correct required dosage on paper.

The tried and true way of figuring this out is first talking with your physician or licensed healthcare professional to figure out a good starting dosage for your situation, begin with their recommendation. Then, like any other item, begin experimenting.

Although we are unable to provide you with recommended dosages, we can give you some insight from data collected from the staff here at Simply Add™.

The average desired dose in CBD edibles by the staff here at Simply Add™ ranges from 10 mg to 25 mg per edible, with a consumption frequency ranging from 2-4 edibles per day. These numbers do not take into consideration the use of topicals, which a majority of our staff also use.

We also found that our staff at Simply Add™ consumes CBD edibles for a variety of reasons. Some self-reported reasons for consuming CBD edibles in these dosages and frequencies throughout the day by our staff include anxiety, arthritis, chronic pain, general health, inflammation, insomnia, and restless sleeping.

All of our edibles recipes on Simply Add™ were created for our staff, with the self-reported data provided by our staff in mind. As previously stated, we highly recommend talking with your physician and experimenting to make sure the edibles you consume are tailored to your specific situation.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”How to Make CBD Oil Edibles to Microdose CBD” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580251176912{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”]One of the best ways to microdose CBD with edibles is to make your own edibles. Every part of your body will absorb the benefits of skincare products different, let alone when comparing this to other people.

Some people can use 3 pumps of 500 mg CBD lotion rubbed all over their back and feel the full upper body effect, while others may need that on specific amount applied directly to a trouble spot on their neck to feel the effects they need.
